Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has revealed a bizarre connection between his film and The Last of Us live action series on HBO.
Álvarez revealed on X/Twitter that Alien: Romulus character Kay, played by Isabella Merced, was partly inspired by Dina from The Last of Us Part 2.
"Fun fact: I was playing The Last of Us Part 2 while writing Alien: Romulus," Álvarez said. "The story of a pregnant Dina made me think of having the character of Kay be pregnant too. Then I cast Isabela Merced to play Kay."
The Last of Us Season 2 Cast: Who's New and Coming Back to the HBO Show?
![The Last of Us is returning for a second season in 2025 and we’re finally starting to learn who will be joining the cast, playing some of our favorite characters from the second game in Naughty Dog’s PlayStation series. It all kicked off with the big reveal that Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever would be taking on the role of Abby, followed soon after that by the casting announcements of Jesse and Dina.
There will be plenty more reveals as we get closer to the much-anticipated debut of Season 2, and we’ll be updating this article as we learn more! For now, however, come check out who the new cast members are, who is returning, who may return, and who, sadly, appears not to be coming back.]()
One year later, in January 2024, Merced was cast by HBO to play Dina in The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO. "True story," Álvarez insisted.
Alien: Romulus arrived earlier in August as the latest film in the long running sci-fi franchise. It sees a group of young space colonizers, including Merced as Kay, unsurprisingly come face to face with a big spooky space beastie.
The Last of Us Season 2, meanwhile, is expected sometime in 2025 and continues the story of Joel and Ellie as they work to survive the apocalypse.
In our 9/10 review of the first season, IGN said: "HBO's The Last of Us is a stunning adaptation that should thrill newcomers and enrich those already familiar with Joel and Ellie's journey alike."
