The biggest reason the Saints lost one of their preseason games could help them win games that actually count

The New Orleans Saints went 1-2 in their three preseason games of 2024.

In their second matchup, San Francisco 49ers depth running back Matt Breida had a nice game. He looked spry and quick just after getting brought back by San Fran. Against New Orleans, he totaled 24 rushing yards on seven carries and 25 yards on two receptions.

Breida was one of the 49ers' top offensive performers. Now, he's looking for a new team after the 49ers released him on Monday morning.

Saints should sign Matt Breida after recent release

New Orleans has been considering getting more explosive at the RB position. Jamaal Williams has a role behind Alvin Kamara, but he lacks that big play ability. Kendre Miller remains on the shelf with an injury.

Behind those guys, a group of Jordan Mims, James Robinson, and Jacob Kibodi are all vying for a spot or two on the active roster. If New Orleans added Breida, they'd be getting a different style of runner - compared to those guys.

Of course, a roster spot is not guaranteed. Adding Breida to the practice squad could make the most sense for New Orleans - in case of any injuries at the position. Plus, without Miller in the mix, they lack a second receiving option outside of Kamara at the RB position.

Breida covers that ground and provides another veteran option with NFL experience. He's still just 29 years old.

We will see how active the Saints are once they complete roster cutdowns on Tuesday.
