Sabres Should Make Big Move With Rising Star

The Buffalo Sabres would be wise to lock up this young forward.

While the Buffalo Sabres had a disappointing 2023-24 season, forward JJ Peterka was an apparent bright spot in it. After posting 12 goals and 32 points in 77 games for the Sabres as a rookie in 2022-23, he set new career highs with 28 goals, 22 assists, and 50 points in 82 games this past season. It was a big step in the right direction for the 22-year-old, and he will now look to build off it in 2024-25.

Peterka is expected to be a crucial part of the Sabres' roster next season. He is projected to be in their top six and potentially on their first line. Because of this, there is a real chance that his offense could hit an even higher level next season.

When noting that Peterka has shown immense progress, the Sabres should seriously consider signing the 2020 second-round pick to a contract extension before the start of the season.

Peterka is currently entering the final year of his entry-level contract and is set to be a restricted free agent next summer. However, the Sabres could elect to act quickly and lock him up to his next deal early.

Ultimately, given how well Peterka has performed for the Sabres, it may be worthwhile for them to show confidence in their young forward and get him signed to his next deal. From here, we will need to keep an eye on what happens on that front.
