Report: Carolina Panthers plan to sign veteran DL Charles Harris to roster

The Carolina Panthers reportedly plan to sign veteran defensive lineman Charles Harris to the roster, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

A former first round pick of the Miami Dolphins, Harris has 16.5 career sacks to his name. He has familiarity with Panthers DL coach Todd Walsh, who coached Harris in Detroit in 2021.

That season, he had 7.5 sacks, a career high.

Harris was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Dolphins out of Missouri. He played three seasons with the team before going to the Atlanta Falcons in 2020.

Harris spent the last three years in Detroit.

In three years at Missouri, Harris logged 136 total tackles, 80 solo tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, five pass deflections, one fumble recovery and five forced fumbles.

As a member of the Class of 2013, Harris was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his high school football at Lincoln College Prep in Kansas City, MO.

The Panthers could use all the help they need after Sunday’s season opener. They fell 47-10 to the New Orleans Saints on the road.

Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 161 yards and two interceptions. On the flip side, Derek Carr was nearly flawless, throwing for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Alvin Kamara added 83 rushing yards and a score. With no pass rush or run defense, the Panthers hope someone like Harris can aid the effort.

The Panthers have their home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
